What is fear?

In my last blog, I talked on the technique used by our Supervisor to catch the guilty. I will take fear from a different point of view though.

What is fear? Basically, its a shock response to your brain which stimulates a fright/flight hormone in your body. Which comes to my next question. How does one identify the stimulant?

I wouldn't call myself as an expert, but I have played horror games, so in a modest way, I probably am. If that's the case, every teenager should have an expertise. Back to the topic, games. Why are games been made so enormously popular and successful. Especially, horror games to be exact. I have realized one thing. I recently played Bloodborne, a game similar to the Dark Souls franchise. It is extremely famous for its gore and violent combat. I once played the Five Nights At Freddy's game. It revolved around a security guard working the night shift at a fast food joint. the joint is filled with robot plush toys, or animatronics, as the game suggests. At night however, they are activated and roam the halls of the joint. As a security guard, you are to monitor their activities and stay safe.  nearly cried the first time I played it.

Fear has a lot of factors. Many say that one is afraid of the abnormal, the weird looking. This is probably true. Every horror game or movie, features distinguishable characteristics in the antagonist which sets him/her/it apart from the protagonist. I believe, that discernable looks are the least of the problems. Apart from makeup and outfits in movies and clever animation in games, looks don't matter much, no. What matters more is the actions and speak of the antagonist. Taking the example of FNAF, when the animatronics start to move from their positions, fear kicks in. The sounds and various random movements of the toys would have your heart racing. then finally, the jumpscare which kills your character. If you have played the game, think about how the jump-scare is made. There is the sudden appearance of the robot, followed by a sharp scream. Combined, it could make a newbie jump off his seat (me).

Of course, actions and words don't a horror game make. Every game has to have a setting which screams eerie. The setting of Bloodborne is literally called Nightmare, as if gamers need more insight into what the game is about.

I was actually going to use this a speech, but I chucked that idea out the window and presented it to you.
